What a Serious Matchmaker Checks Before Your First Introduction

When you meet someone through a matchmaker, you're trusting a stranger's judgment about another stranger. That's a significant thing to ask. So it's worth knowing exactly what stands behind an introduction — what a serious matchmaker actually verifies before two people ever meet.

The consultation: understanding the person, not just the profile

It starts with the 90-minute private consultation, and it's deeper than most people expect. We're not filling in preferences on a form. We're having a real conversation about your life: your relationship history, what you've learned from it, your values, your lifestyle, and the difference between what you think you want and what actually works for you.

This matters for vetting because you can't evaluate a potential match without understanding the person they'd be matched with. Compatibility isn't a checklist — it's a judgment call made by someone who knows both sides.

Character references: the step most services skip

Here's what separates serious matchmaking from the rest: personal character references. We have real conversations with people who know the candidate — friends, colleagues, sometimes family. Not a checkbox, not a form letter. Actual phone calls.

Why does this matter so much? Because people reveal themselves in how they treat the people around them. A reference can tell you things no profile and no first date can: Is this person kind when there's nothing to gain? How do they handle conflict? Are they the person they present themselves as?

It's also a seriousness filter. Someone who's casually browsing won't bother providing references. Someone who's genuinely looking for a relationship will. That self-selection does half the vetting work before we even pick up the phone.

Consistency checks

Beyond references, we're looking at the whole picture for consistency. Does the person's account of their life hold together? Do their stated values match how they actually live? Are they honest about the basics — age, relationship status, what they're looking for?

This isn't interrogation. It's the same due diligence you'd do yourself if you had the time, the access, and the detachment. Most people are terrible at vetting their own dates because attraction interferes with judgment. A matchmaker doesn't have that problem.

What we don't do

Worth being clear about the boundaries. We're thorough, but we're not invasive. We don't run covert surveillance, we don't demand anything unreasonable, and everything we check is with the candidate's knowledge and cooperation. The process is in-depth because the stakes warrant it, not because we're suspicious of everyone.

We also don't share your private information with candidates beyond what's needed to make a good introduction. Discretion runs both ways. Your consultation stays confidential, full stop.

Why this changes the first date

Think about the difference between meeting a stranger from an app and meeting someone through this process. With the app, you're spending the first hour doing basic verification: Are they who they said? Are they normal? Are they safe? That's a lot of guardedness to carry into what's supposed to be a pleasant evening.

With a vetted introduction, that layer is handled. You know they've been vouched for by people who know them. You can skip the background check and go straight to the interesting part: do we actually enjoy each other?

Clients tell us this is the single biggest difference. Not the quality of the matches, though that matters — the quality of the first hour.

Questions to ask any matchmaker about vetting

If you're evaluating a practice, ask directly:

  • What does your vetting process involve, specifically?
  • Do you speak to character references? How many?
  • What happens if something concerning comes up?
  • How do you handle my privacy during the process?

Vague or defensive answers tell you everything. A matchmaker who's proud of their process will describe it in detail — like we just did.

What candidates are told about you

Vetting isn't one-directional, and it's worth knowing what happens on the other side. When we approach a candidate about you, they get the same treatment in reverse: they learn enough to decide whether they're interested, but your private details stay private until there's mutual interest in an introduction.

Candidates also go through the same consultation and reference process. Nobody in our network is unverified — not the clients, not the candidates. That symmetry is what makes the introductions work: both people are showing up having been taken seriously.

It's also why we can be honest when something doesn't feel right. If a candidate's references raise a concern, or their story doesn't hold together, we don't make the introduction — and we tell the client why in general terms. We'd rather explain a delay than arrange a date we'd be uneasy about. That judgment is the job.
