What Happens in a Matchmaking Consultation?

The idea of a 90-minute consultation about your love life can feel intimidating. What do they ask? How personal does it get? What if you say the wrong thing? Here's exactly what happens in ours — no mystery, no judgment.

Before you arrive

There's no homework and no test to study for. You don't need to prepare a speech or organise your thoughts. The consultation works best when it's a natural conversation, not a presentation.

The one thing worth doing: spend a few minutes thinking about what you actually want. Not the checklist version — the real version. What does a good relationship look like in your daily life? What mattered in past relationships, for better or worse? You don't need polished answers. Half-formed honesty is more useful than rehearsed clarity.

The first stretch: your story

We start with you. Your background, your life in Kelowna, what a normal week looks like. This isn't small talk — it's context. A matchmaker needs to understand your actual life to recognise who'd fit into it.

We'll talk about your relationship history, including the ones that didn't work. Not to dwell, but because patterns matter. Most people have learned something real from past relationships about what they need and what they can't tolerate. That knowledge is some of the most valuable material in the consultation.

There's no judgment here. We've heard everything, and the things people are most nervous about saying are usually the most useful things to say.

The middle: what you're looking for

Then we get specific. What are your non-negotiables — the things that genuinely matter, not the things you think should matter? What are you flexible on? What does your ideal partner's life look like, and how does it mesh with yours?

We'll also probe gently where your stated preferences and your lived experience might diverge. This isn't about telling you you're wrong — it's about noticing, together, where the interesting tensions are. Sometimes the most useful moment in a consultation is realising that the thing you've been filtering for isn't the thing that actually makes you happy.

We'll talk logistics too: lifestyle, values, family plans, the practical realities of building a life with someone. The unromantic stuff is often what determines whether a relationship works.

The honest assessment

Here's the part most services skip: we'll tell you straight whether we think we can help you. If your situation, timeline, or expectations don't fit what we do well, we'll say so — and we'll say why.

This isn't a rejection. It's respect. Taking on a client we can't serve properly wastes your money and our time. We'd rather have the honest conversation now than a disappointed one in three months.

If it is a fit, we'll explain exactly what happens next: the vetting process, how introductions work, what the timeline realistically looks like, and what we need from you. No surprises later.

Your turn: interview us

The consultation goes both ways. Ask us anything: how vetting works, how many introductions to expect, what happens if it's not working, why we price the way we do. A good matchmaker welcomes scrutiny — it's a sign you're taking the decision seriously, which is exactly the kind of client we want.

Pay attention to how the conversation feels. Do you feel heard or pitched to? Rushed or given space? This is the beginning of a working relationship, and the dynamic in the consultation is the dynamic you'll get throughout.

After the 90 minutes

You'll leave with a clear picture: whether we're a fit, what the process looks like, what it costs ($300/month, three-month minimum — no hidden anything), and what happens next if you decide to go ahead. No pressure to decide on the spot. Take the time you need.

If you do move forward, the vetting process begins — including personal character references — and we start the search. Your first introduction typically follows within weeks.

The thing people worry about most

Nobody says the wrong thing in a consultation. There's no wrong answer to "what are you looking for" — there's only the honest answer and the answer you think you should give, and we can work with the honest one. The whole point of 90 minutes is that there's time to get past the polished version to the real one.

Come as you are. That's literally the assignment.

If you're nervous, that's normal

Almost everyone is nervous before their first consultation. It feels exposing to talk about your love life with a stranger, even a professional one. A few things that might help: remember that we've had this conversation hundreds of times and nothing you say will surprise us. Remember that the consultation is confidential — what's said in the room stays in the room. And remember that you're interviewing us too. You're not auditioning for approval; you're deciding whether to hire us.

The clients who get the most out of the consultation are the ones who let the nerves fade after the first ten minutes and just talk honestly. It almost always happens on its own. Give it ten minutes.
